UK flexes military muscles on Malvinas

The options being proposed at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, London include the deployment of additional troops, another warship and extra RAF Typhoon combat aircraft to the archipelago.

?
The equipment is to be sent off to the region ahead of a referendum London wants to hold in March so that islanders could vote for being a part of Britain or Argentina.

?
Moreover, a ?show of force? such as drills in the South Atlantic is probable, which could involve the deployment of the Royal Navy?s Response Task Force Group, a flotilla comprising destroyers, a frigate, a submarine and commandos.

?
?There are a number of contingencies to deal with any threat to the Falklands [Malvinas] and they are currently being reviewed,? a senior British defence source said.

?
?No orders have been given to any military unit at this stage but prudent planning within all units who could be deployed in the event of a crisis is taking place.?

?
The Argentinian government has strongly condemned Britain?s previous plans to conduct military exercises on the disputed Malvinas islands as well as the referendum, which it says does not affect Argentina's position on the islands.

?
Tensions over Malvinas sovereignty recently escalated after British Prime Minister David Cameron once more rejected the Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner?s call to hand back the islands earlier this month.
