As a newly appointed member of my son's school's PTA, I have an idea to upgrade the music class because apparently, even with the revamped education system now that's supposed to concentrate on the "arts" and not only on the "academic" side, the arts division at my son's school is still lacking in a lot of aspects.
We don't need a jackson rr1 electric guitar in the music class, but at least the basic recorders, melodians, xylophones, cymbals, and other percussion instruments. I remember when I was in school we used to have the best time in Music class, playing with all these.
Well, I've got to really get some proposals going before the next PTA meeting. I hope the rest of the committee agree in upgrading our arts division. Wish me luck!
I brought this up at the PTA meeting and the headmistress said the school is affiliated with One Music Academy so we can send our kids to music lessons instead because the school doesn't have a professional music teacher to teach the kids. Not every parent can afford to send their kids to extra music lessons at a music academy okay.. So parents at the lower income range are at a disadvantage, because even though Music is a subject at school, it's not being conducted like it should. It's really disappointing.
I really want to do something about this. My son is not really academically inclined.. he's more interested in music, art, and drama. So for the time being, he spends his holidays learning how to play the guitar with my older brother.

A cargo of diesel, which can be used to fuel army tanks or as heating fuel, was expected to arrive at Syria's Mediterranean port of Banias this week, according to two traders and shipping data reported by Reuters. The cargo could be worth up to $50 million.
Chavez is a vociferous advocate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who face pressure from Western sanctions. Few leaders on the world stage have polarised opinion as sharply as the Venezuelan president.
Chavez, who still defends the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has repeatedly backed Arab leaders who have faced a year-long wave of popular protests, which have already toppled four governments.
UN sees possible crimes against humanity in Syria
Venezuelan state oil firm PDVSA shipped the cargo aboard the Negra Hipolita vessel, according to AIS tracking data on the Reuters Freight Fundamentals Database and to trade sources. The same tanker carried the first such shipment in November, the sources said.
PDVSA could not immediately be reached for comment.
"The aggressions against Syria are continuing," Chavez said in an address last month. "It's the same formula they (the West) used against Libya - inject violence, inject terrorism from abroad and later invoke the United Nations to intervene."
The South American OPEC member nation has also tried to aid Iran with fuel supplies amid sanctions over its nuclear programme.
Rights groups say close to 6,000 people have been killed in attacks by Syrian security forces against civilian demonstrators and an increasingly powerful rebel insurgency.
The United States and Europe are pressuring Assad to leave power. Russia and China this month vetoed a United Nations resolution calling on Assad to step aside.
EU threatens new sanctions on Syria
The Venezuelan tanker was last seen off the coast of Cyprus with a destination of Banias and the estimated arrival date of Wednesday, AIS ship tracking on Reuters showed. The satellite tracking has been switched off since Wednesday.
The shipment comes at a critical time for Syria, which has faced worsening energy shortages this winter after Western sanctions all but halted imports, which are needed to meet half the country's diesel demand.
Syria's oil minister spoke about a possibility of Venezuelan imports in January, and traders said the Negra Hipolita diesel shipment to Syria was the second delivery in the past three months.
The vessel can carry 47,000 tonnes, which if fully loaded would be worth around $50 million. It was not clear how much diesel the ship was carrying.
While there is no blanket embargo on supplying fuel to Syria, its state-owned oil firm Sytrol, responsible for organising fuel imports and exports, was placed on a U.S. blacklist last summer, and the EU followed suit in December.
The European Union has stopped short of banning product deliveries for humanitarian reasons, but oil traders said most deliveries have stopped anyway as traditional suppliers are increasingly reluctant to do business with Syria.
Normally an exporter of crude oil even in peacetime, Syria has relied on imports for more than half of its annual consumption of 5 million tonnes diesel because of a shortage of domestic refining capacity. International sanctions have stopped Syrian oil exports since September last year, drastically stretching government budget revenues.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's become the routine in the cable industry that subscribers stream out the door every quarter, hanging up on cable in favor of service from satellite or phone companies. But in the October to December quarter, Comcast Corp. nearly managed to stop that flow.
The country's largest cable company on Wednesday said it lost 17,000 TV customers in the fourth quarter, the smallest number of defections in five years. It compares with a loss of 135,000 subscribers in the same quarter a year earlier.
Comcast credits added TV channels and better customer service for the better retention. Its stock jumped nearly 8 percent before regular trading.
The Philadelphia-based company added a net 336,000 broadband customers in the same period. That was the best fourth-quarter result in years. Both cable and phone companies have been reporting declining numbers, since more than two-thirds of U.S. households already have broadband.
The result indicates that Comcast keeps stealing broadband customers from phone companies. Together, AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. added a net 51,000 broadband customers in the period.
Comcast on Wednesday reported net income of $1.29 billion, or 47 cents per share, for the quarter. That's up 26 percent from $1.02 billion, or 36 cents per share, in the last three months of 2010.
Analysts polled by FactSet were on average expecting earnings of 41 cents per share.
Revenue was $15.04 billion, up 55 percent from $9.72 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010. The increase was due mainly to the acquisition of NBC Universal, which closed a year ago. Revenue rose 3 percent when factoring in NBC Universal in the previous-year figure.
Analysts had forecast revenue of $14.94 billion.
The cable provider said it was raising its annual dividend from 45 cents to 65 cents per share, and also authorized a new $6.5 billion stock buyback program. The company intends to buy back $3 billion in shares this year. The dividend is worth $1.8 billion to shareholders annually.
Comcast shares rose $2.09 to $29.34 in premarket trading. In recent days, the shares have been trading at the highest level in four and a half years.

Greek leaders blow chance of quick EU bailout approval (Reuters)
BRUSSELS/ATHENS (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers have dropped plans for a special face-to-face meeting on Wednesday on Greece's new international bailout, saying political party chiefs in Athens had failed to provide the required commitment to reform.
A day before euro zone finance ministers had been due to meet in Brussels to consider the bailout, the man most likely to be Greece's next prime minister had yet to sign a commitment to implement the austerity measures demanded by the EU and IMF.
Likewise, the cabinet had yet to fill a 325 million euro ($427 million) gap in the budget cuts promised for 2012, even though the ministers of the Eurogroup had told Athens that they needed a complete package of promises and signed undertakings.
With the European Union's patience with Greece close to breaking point, Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker downgraded Wednesday's talks to a telephone conference call.
That appeared to kill any chance that the Eurogroup would approve on Wednesday the 130 billion euro bailout, funds from which Greece must start getting by next month to avoid a messy bankruptcy. It is due to hold a regular meeting on February 20.
Juncker said he was awaiting written undertakings from Greek party leaders on pushing through with the austerity package of pay, pension and job cuts - which parliament passed early on Monday as rioters wrecked buildings across central Athens.
"I did not yet receive the required political assurances from the leaders of the Greek coalition parties on the implementation of the program," he said in a statement.
A source familiar with the bailout negotiations said conservative leader Antonis Samaras had yet to sign the commitment to implement the deeply unpopular austerity package, a condition set by the EU/IMF lenders who are weary of broken Greek promises on economic reform and budget cuts.
"So far Samaras has not given a letter of commitment and this is a problem," the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity. The New Democracy party of Samaras declined comment.
A government source said Samaras would provide the undertaking on Wednesday morning. If he does, he will be sticking to a pattern among Greek politicians of working right up to deadlines or beyond, infuriating EU leaders.
This practice of keeping everyone in suspense until the last minute appears to have cost Greece the full Eurogroup meeting. Time is running out as it faces a chaotic default if it cannot meet 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments due on March 20.

With New Democracy well ahead in opinion polls, Samaras is frontrunner to become the next prime minister. When parliament debated the austerity package he indicated that he would try to renegotiate the terms of the bailout, further sowing doubt in the minds of European leaders.
A source at the PASOK socialist party, the other coalition party, said its leader George Papandreou had already provided a signed undertaking.
Greece's cabinet negotiated late into Tuesday evening on solving the other hitch with Brussels, the 325 million euro hole in the 3.3 billion euros of extra budget cuts which the government has promised for this year.
All this was played out as Greece's downward economic spiral accelerated. Data on Tuesday showed that economy shrank seven percent in the fourth quarter of last year, even more than the five percent contraction of the third quarter.
Greece is now in its fifth year of recession and is well on its way to suffering one of the biggest slumps of modern history. Gross domestic product has contracted 16 percent from its peak and the austerity will only make that worse.
Prime Minister Lucas Papademos has warned that failure to back the bailout would consign Greece to economic catastrophe.
But with many Greeks suffering huge cuts in their living standards and young people burning and wrecking almost 100 Athens buildings in one night on Sunday, some people believe the catastrophe is already underway.
"On the current path - which is not sustainable in my view - we may very well see Greek GDP go down 25-30 percent, which would be historically unprecedented. It's a disastrous crisis for them," said Uri Dadush, at the Carnegie Endowment think tank in Washington.
That would put Greece in the same league as the United States, where the economy shrank 29 percent during the Great Depression.
"They're suffering. It's nasty," said Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, another in Washington think tank.
"If you could say with a reasonable probability that the worst was over, then that would be different. But you can't say that. They're in for a long nightmare." ($1 = 0.7616 euros)

When it comes to design, having a point of view is everything, and this time of year it seems like everybody has one.
New year trends are picking up steam and what was deemed "so 2011" is moving further into the past. Honeysuckle pink, rainbow bookcases, those ubiquitous "Keep Calm And Carry On" signs, I get. But DIY? Dead?
I've been a fan of Sheila Bridges traditional design and her one-of-a-kind "Harlem Toile" collection for some time. She's been a go-to source on everything from how well President Obama decorated his White House digs, to giving Gayle King's kitchen a sunny new look. So it was no surprise when Elle Decor called on Bridges to help put some bad 2011 trends to rest.
What was surprising, however, was the trend Bridges says we need to let go:
The DIY craze has run its course, says decorator Sheila Bridges, who has seen her share of "earthy, handmade concoctions." Just because it can be reclaimed doesn't mean it should be.
Gasp! In a time when penny pinching is de rigueur and treasure hunting is all the rage, I'm sorry, Ms. Bridges, but I have to disagree.
I mean, since when has DIY been resigned to a "craze" anyway? Don't handmade creations and a unique point of view date back to the very beginnings of interior design? Whether you choose to furnish a room from a single source or mix new items with ones you already own, it's all about adding your paint, your fabric, your way of making it, well, yours, right?
Yes, this is coming from someone who spent five years learning how to make everything from tonic water to trivets from scratch. At Martha Stewart Living, where I worked as an editor, practically everything was homegrown. But my experience there also made me hyper-aware of the incredibly vast world of DIY that was thriving beyond our walls.
There's Etsy, of course, who boasted some $467.8 million in merchandise sales last year, up from $314 million the year before. Then there's celebrity blogger Erica Domesek, whose DIY creations have quickly made her blog, P.S. I Made This, a household name. But if that isn't convincing enough, I've asked four DIY mavens to weigh in.

His clever creations (including this $300 living room makeover he did for a good friend of mine) has landed him a regular spot on the "Nate Berkus Show." Cathy Hobbs, interior designer and home stager extraordinaire, worked her way through six rounds of HGTV's reality competition "Design Star" last fall. Alzheimer's Disease Symptoms Reversed in Mice

A cancer drug given to mice eliminates brain-damaging proteins, leading to improved cognition within days, but will it work in humans?

A nearly 13-year-old skin cancer drug rapidly alleviates molecular signs of Alzheimer's disease and improves brain function, according to the results of a new mouse study being hailed as extremely promising. Early-stage human clinical trials could begin within months.
In the study, published?online in today in Science, researchers from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and colleagues used mice genetically engineered to exhibit some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's. Most notably, the mice produced amyloid beta peptides?toxic protein fragments that gum up neurons and lead to cell death?and showed signs of forgetfulness.

The Case Western team, led by Gary Landreth, decided to try the drug bexarotene (Targretin), approved in 1999 for cutaneous T cell lymphomas. The team chose this drug because of its long experience working with proteins in the nucleus of brain cells that can induce biochemical processes that affect amyloid beta.
Landreth and his colleagues fed bexarotene to the demented mice, and with just a single dose it lowered the most toxic form of the amyloid beta peptide by 25 percent within six hours, an effect that lasted for up to three days. Mice that were cognitively impaired by the amyloid buildup resumed normal behaviors after 72 hours: They began to crinkle toilet paper placed nearby to make nests, a skill lost as amyloid increased in their brains.
"We have successfully reversed all of the known pathological features and behavioral deficits found in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease," Landreth says. "Never before has anyone observed clearance of amyloid plaques with such speed in mouse models."
Other Alzheimer's researchers hail the work. "I think this is extremely promising," says Samuel Gandy, a professor of neurology and psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and associate director of the hospital's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. "One of the drugs that has been on our wish list for 25 years is a drug that would clear existing amyloid deposits."
"Landreth's paper is impressive," adds Kenneth Kosik, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "The effects in mice, including some restoration of cognitive abilities, are dramatic."
Neural sanitation
In a field littered with drug failures, the study offers hope that the strategy of clearing the brain of the toxic peptide can work. Bexarotene does not do so directly, however; instead, it activates retinoid receptors on brain cells that increase production of a fat-protein complex, apolipoprotein E, that helps rid excess amyloid in the fluid-filled space between neurons. It also appears to enhance another cleanup process, called phagocytosis.
Bexarotene functions differently than an amyloid-clearance approach using monoclonal antibodies, which are further down the drug development pipeline. These antibodies bind directly to amyloid and then remove it, but they have sometimes caused fluid to fill brain tissue. Bexarotene may be less likely to cause such swelling. "I think the fact that we're inducing a natural process by turning on these receptors doesn't lend itself to water on the brain," says Paige Cramer, Landreth's graduate student who performed much of the research. Unlike bexarotene, which is taken orally, monoclonals are more troublesome to administer, because they must be delivered intravenously, and if they receive U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, they would likely be significantly more expensive.
