Daredevil skydiver breaks sound barrier in record 24-mile leap over New Mexico desert

ROSWELL, N.M. - Felix Baumgartner stood alone at the edge of space, poised in the open doorway of a capsule suspended above Earth and wondering if he would make it back alive. Twenty four miles below him, millions of people were right there with him, watching on the Internet and marveling at the wonder of the moment.

A second later, he stepped off the capsule and barreled toward the New Mexico desert as a tiny white speck against a darkly-tinted sky. Millions watched him breathlessly as he shattered the sound barrier and then landed safely about nine minutes later, becoming the world's first supersonic skydiver.

"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," Baumgartner said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive."

The tightly-orchestrated jump meant primarily to entertain became much more than that in the dizzying, breathtaking moment ? a collectively shared cross between Neil Armstrong's moon landing and Evel Knievel's famed motorcycle jumps on ABC's "Wide World of Sports."

It was part scientific wonder, part daredevil reality show, with the live-streamed event instantly capturing the world's attention on a sleepy Sunday at the same time seven NFL football games were being played. It proved, once again, the power of the Internet in a world where news travels as fast as Twitter.

The event happened without a network broadcast in the United States, though organizers said more than 40 television stations in 50 countries ? including cable's Discovery Channel in the U.S. ? carried the live feed. Instead, millions flocked online, drawing more than 8 million simultaneous views to a YouTube live stream at its peak, YouTube officials said.

More than 130 digital outlets carried the live feed, organizers said.

It was a last hurrah for what some have billed as a dying Space Age, as NASA's shuttle program ends and the ways humans explore space is dramatically changing. As the jump unfolded, the space shuttle Endeavor crept toward a Los Angeles museum, where it will become nothing more than an exhibit.

Baumgartner, a 43-year-old Austrian, hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, according to preliminary data, and became the first person to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft. The capsule he jumped from had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above Earth, carried by a 55-story ultra-thin helium balloon.

Landing on his feet in the desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of jubilant friends and spectators who closely followed at a command center. Among them was his mother, Eva Baumgartner, who was overcome with emotion, crying.

"Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," an exuberant Baumgartner told reporters outside mission control after the jump.

About half of Baumgartner's nine-minute descent was a free fall of 119,846 feet, according to Brian Utley, a jump observer from the FAI, an international group that works to determine and maintain the integrity of aviation records.

During the first part of Baumgartner's free fall, anxious onlookers at the command center held their breath as he appeared to spin uncontrollably.

"When I was spinning first 10, 20 seconds, I never thought I was going to lose my life but I was disappointed because I'm going to lose my record. I put seven years of my life into this," he said.

He added: "In that situation, when you spin around, it's like hell and you don't know if you can get out of that spin or not. Of course, it was terrifying. I was fighting all the way down because I knew that there must be a moment where I can handle it."

Baumgartner said traveling faster than sound is "hard to describe because you don't feel it." The pressurized suit prevented him from feeling the rushing air or even the loud noise he made when breaking the sound barrier.

With no reference points, "you don't know how fast you travel," he said.

Coincidentally, Baumgartner's accomplishment came on the 65th anniversary of the day that U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first man to officially break the sound barrier in a jet. Yeager, in fact, commemorated that feat on Sunday, flying in the back seat of an F-15 Eagle as it broke the sound barrier at more than 30,000 feet above California's Mojave Desert.

At Baumgartner's insistence, some 30 cameras recorded his stunt. Shortly after launch early Sunday, screens at mission control showed the capsule, dangling from the massive balloon, as it rose gracefully above the New Mexico desert. Baumgartner could be seen on video, calmly checking instruments inside the capsule.

The dive was more than just a stunt. NASA is eager to improve its blueprints for future spacesuits.

Baumgartner's team included Joe Kittinger, who first tried to break the sound barrier from 19.5 miles up in 1960, reaching speeds of 614 mph. With Kittinger inside mission control, the two men could be heard going over technical details during the ascension.

"Our guardian angel will take care of you," Kittinger radioed to Baumgartner around the 100,000-foot mark.

After Baumgartner landed, his sponsor, Red Bull, posted a picture to Facebook of him kneeling on the ground. It generated nearly 216,000 likes, 10,000 comments and more than 29,000 shares in less than 40 minutes.

On Twitter, half the worldwide trending topics had something to do with the jump, pushing past seven NFL football games. Among them was this tweet from NASA: "Congratulations to Felix Baumgartner and RedBull Stratos on record-breaking leap from the edge of space!"

This attempt marked the end of a long road for Baumgartner, a record-setting high-altitude jumper. He already made two preparation jumps in the area, one from 15 miles high and another from 18 miles high. He has said that this was his final jump.

Red Bull has never said how much the long-running, complex project cost.

Although he broke the sound barrier, the highest manned-balloon flight record and became the man to jump from the highest altitude, he failed to break Kittinger's 5 minute and 35 second longest free fall record. Baumgartner's was timed at 4 minutes and 20 seconds in free fall.

He said he opened his parachute at 5,000 feet because that was the plan.

"I was putting everything out there, and hope for the best and if we left one record for Joe ? hey it's fine," he said when asked if he intentionally left the record for Kittinger to hold. "We needed Joe Kittinger to help us break his own record, and that tells the story of how difficult it was and how smart they were in the 60's. He is 84 years old, and he is still so bright and intelligent and enthusiastic".

Baumgartner has said he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

Before that, though, he said, "I'll go back to LA to chill out for a few days."

(AP) ? Carlos Beltran hit his 14th career postseason homer and David Freese also went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 6-4 lead over the San Francisco Giants after six innings of the NL championship series opener on Sunday night.

Two nights after rallying from a 6-0 deficit to win the decisive Game 5 of the division series against Washington, the Cardinals found themselves trying to hold onto that same lead.

Freese hit a two-run homer in the second and Beltran followed with one in the fourth as the Cardinals knocked out Madison Bumgarner with six runs in 3 2-3 innings.

But Lance Lynn struggled to hold onto that lead in his first postseason start after 10 career relief appearances. Lynn, an 18-game winner in the regular season, moved into the rotation to take the place of Jaime Garcia, who was taken off division series roster with an injured left shoulder.

After starting the game with three hitless innings, Lynn ran into trouble with two outs and a runner on first in the fourth. Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt followed with singles to drive in San Francisco's first run. They both scored on Gregor Blanco's triple. Brandon Crawford followed with an RBI double to make it 6-4 and Lynn left after walking pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff.

Joe Kelly got out of the jam when second baseman Daniel Descalso made a diving stop of Angel Pagan's grounder up the middle.

This marked the first time since 1958 that the two most recent World Series champions met in the postseason. That year, the New York Yankees avenged a loss in 1957 to beat the Milwaukee Braves for the title. The Cardinals were involved the only other two times that happened, losing to the Yankees in the 1943 and '28 World Series.

Bumgarner breezed through a perfect first inning but ran into trouble in the second when Yadier Molina singled on an 0-2 pitch with one out. Freese then drove a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left-center to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

That gave Freese 25 career RBIs in the postseason ? tied with Molina for third most ever for the Cardinals. Only Albert Pujols (52) and Jim Edmonds (41) have more.

Bumgarner then couldn't make it out of the fourth. Descalso doubled and scored on Pete Kozma's double. Jon Jay added a two-out RBI single and Beltran ended Bumgarner's night with the homer.

George Kontos got out of the fourth and two-time NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum pitched two hitless innings as he once again excelled in his new role out of the bullpen.

Giants fans didn't know if they would be back at the ballpark this year after watching their team fall behind 2-0 in their first-round series to Cincinnati when Bumgarner lost to the Reds exactly a week ago. But San Francisco made it to the NLCS by becoming the first team ever to win three straight road games after falling behind 2-0 in a best-of-five series.

The Cardinals may have had an even more improbably comeback to get back to the NLCS. St. Louis overcame a 6-0 deficit in Game 5 of the division series to Washington ? the largest ever in a winner-take-all postseason game, according to STATS LLC. The Cardinals trailed 7-5 heading into the ninth inning before scoring four runs to keep their repeat hopes alive.

Both teams kept the same roster they ended with last round. The only change was at first-base coach for the Giants, where assistant batting coach Joe Lefebvre took over after Roberto Kelly was sidelined with a concussion after being hit in the head by a ball in batting practice Saturday.

Taliban's "Radio Mullah" sent hit squad after Pakistani schoolgirl

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - One of the Taliban's most feared commanders, Maulana Fazlullah, carefully briefed two killers from his special hit squad on their next target.

The gunmen weren't going after any army officer, politician or Western diplomat. Their target was a 14-year-old Pakistani schoolgirl who had angered the Taliban by speaking out for "Western"-style girls' education.

Tuesday's shooting of Malala Yousufzai was the culmination of years of campaigning that had pitted the fearless, smiling young girl against one of Pakistan's most ruthless Taliban commanders.

Their story began in 2009, when Fazlullah, known as Radio Mullah for his fiery radio broadcasts, took over Swat Valley, and ordered the closure of girls' schools, including Yousufzai's.

Outraged, the then-11-year-old kept a blog for the BBC under a pen name and later launched a campaign for girls' education. It won her Pakistan's highest civilian honor and death threats from the Taliban.

Yousufzai was not blind to the dangers. In her hometown of Mingora, Fazlullah's Taliban fighters dumped bodies near where her family lived.

"I heard my father talking about another three bodies lying at Green Chowk," she wrote in her diary, referring to a nearby roundabout.

A military offensive pushed Fazlullah out of Swat in 2009, but his men simply melted away across the border to Afghanistan. Earlier this year, they kidnapped and beheaded 17 Pakistani soldiers in one of several cross border raids.

Yousufzai continued speaking out despite the danger. As her fame grew, Fazlullah tried everything he could to silence her. The Taliban published death threats in the newspapers and slipped them under her door. But she ignored them.

The Taliban say that's why they sent assassins, despite a tribal code forbidding the killing of women.

"We had no intentions to kill her but were forced when she would not stop (speaking against us)," said Sirajuddin Ahmad, a spokesman of Swat Taliban now based in Afghanistan's Kunar province.

He said the Taliban held a meeting a few months ago at which they unanimously agreed to kill her. The task was then given to military commanders to carry out.

The militia has a force of around 100 men specialized in targeted killing, fighters said. They chose two men, aged between 20-30, who were locals from Swat Valley.

The gunmen had proved their worth in previous assassinations, killing an opposition politician and attacking a leading hotelier for "obscenity" in promoting tourism.

Their trademark is to kill by shots to the head.

Such hits, although dangerous, are also a badge of honor among the Taliban. The fighters who carry them out often receive personal calls of congratulations from senior leaders and may also get cash or guns.

Now it was Yousufzai's turn.

"Before the attack, the two fighters personally collected information about Malala's route to school, timing, the vehicle she used and her security," Ahmad said.

They decided to shoot her near a military checkpoint to make the point they could strike anywhere, he said.

On Tuesday, the two men stopped the bus she was riding home in. They asked for Yousufzai by name. Although the frightened girls said she wasn't there, the men fired at her and also hit two other girls in the van. One of them remains in critical condition.

Shot in the head and the neck, Yousufzai still lies unconscious in hospital, unaware that world leaders from U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to U.S. President Barack Obama have pledged support. Schoolchildren in Swat prayed for her recovery.

"The American people are shocked by this deplorable shooting of a girl who was targeted because she dared to attend school," a statement from the White House said.

On Wednesday, the singer Madonna dedicated a song to Yousufzai during a L.A. concert. In a gesture that bemused many Pakistanis, she performed a striptease that revealed Yousufzai's first name, Malala, written across her back.

Her would-be killers said they had no idea their attack would propel their victim, already a national hero, into a global icon.

"Actually the media gave it so much importance and now even Ban Ki-moon used dirty language against us," Ahmad said. The international community stayed silent when the Pakistani security forces killed women during a crackdown, he complained.

Now that they had failed to kill Yousufzai, they would target her father, Ahmad said.

Ziauddin Yousufzai, the headmaster of a girls' school, is on their hit list for speaking against them, his activities to promote peace in the region and for encouraging his daughter.

"We have a clear-cut stance. Anyone who takes side with the government against us will have to die at our hands," Ahmad warned. "You will see. Other important people will soon become victims."

SFI Marketing Group - Income Business Reviews

Skip Our Review, Click Here For Our TOP rated Opportunity

SFI Marketing Group offers a work at home business opportunity that may work for you.

Updated: We received an e-mail correspondence from a SFI member suggesting our review was in error.

The following lists their current information. We thank the SFI member who contacted us as again our goal is to offer as accurate information as is available on many opportunities as possible.

Hearing direct from those active in these programs is often the best information we can get and is much appreciated.

This is a nice reflection on SFI and what it offers and is summarized below:

SFI Marketing Group, or Six Figure Income, is a marketing company owned by Gerry Carson. It is an
affiliate based company with direct marketing; you can also recruit others to earn money on their efforts like many online programs offer.

Once you sign up as an affiliate, you can sell their products. They have nearly a million products. This can be a
problem as you are competing with so many other suppliers; it is often better to have your own unique product.

Being an affiliate, you get access to their program information, many materials to assist you in your business, and also a website. The website is ?replicated? which means it is identical to many others that are affiliates in SFI.

There are draw backs to this kind of website including your site is not unique and it often isn?t something that will get found on search engines.

Democratic candidates pledge support for early childhood education

Reginald Reid (left), Earline Parmon, Charlie Mellies and Ed Hanes Jr. were among the candidates at the Health Department Auditorium on Thursday night.

The four candidates favored to win Forsyth County legislative races in Republican-leaning districts who, if elected, are likely to serve in the majority in the two houses of the NC General Assembly, failed to show up for a forum on early childhood education on Thursday night.

Absent from the forum, which was funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, Smart Start of Forsyth County and the United Way of Forsyth County, were NC Senate District 31 candidate Pete Brunstetter, along with Debra Conrad, Donny Lambeth and Julia Howard, who are respectively seeking election in House districts 74, 75 and 79.

Among the eight candidates on the dais, only one has legislative experience.

?I invite you to look at my record for the last two years, and where I?ve stood on the issues of early education, More at Four and Head Start programs,? said Democrat Earline Parmon, who currently represents House District 72 and who is running in the Democratic-leaning Senate District 32. ?I?m an advocate for education by any means necessary as long as it?s legal and moral?. I am an educator. I?m passionate. I was told that Adam Clayton Powell Sr. said, ?Learn, baby, learn so that you can earn, baby, earn.? That?s my story and I?m sticking to it.? ?

After the forum, Parmon greeted Stephanie Fanjul, president of Smart Start and the NC Partnership for Children, a statewide program to help prepare young children for school. The Republican-controlled General Assembly cut funding to Smart Start and a similar program, More at Four, by 20 percent in 2011.?

?We?ve appreciated everything you?ve done,? Fanjul told Parmon. ?You?ve been with us all the way.??

Candidates were asked whether they would vote to restore the funds that were cut from Smart Start and More at Four in 2011.?

Parmon said she would vote to restore funding to Smart Start. Her Republican opponent, Reginald Reid, said he favors focusing investment at the 3rd-grade level.?

?This is my childhood experience,? he said. ?There was an incident when I was in third grade. I?m African American. I come from a single mother. And I come from poverty, so they tried to label me as ?at risk.? So they put me in special programs. My mother said, ?He?s not at risk.? My achievement tests were off the charts. But we need more funding for public education, especially at third grade. And that?s where we need to get ?em at.??

Ed Hanes Jr., the Democratic candidate for the Democratic-leaning House District 72 seat, said he would vote to increase funding for early-childhood education ?to make sure that we don?t step backwards from our responsibility to our students here in North Carolina.??

Charlie Mellies, his Republican opponent, also expressed support while tethering funding increases to economic improvements.?

?Ideally, I think we would all want to increase funding to education,? he said. ?I am 100 percent against decreasing further education funds. At the minimum I would want to maintain the current funding, and hopefully raise revenue by adding taxpayers in order to increase funds for education.??

Evelyn Terry, who is running in the Democratic-leaning House District 71 seat, echoed her Democratic cohorts.?

?My vote would certainly be to restore what has been taken away and to find ways to move forward to provide more,? she said.?

Kris McCann, her Republican opponent, said he concurred ?to hold the funding for Smart Start as it is.??

The forum gave Terry and McCann an opportunity to air contrasting philosophies about the relative importance of social and individual responsibility.?

?We don?t live in a world anymore where you can just go and ? the bootstrap philosophy was never real, and it isn?t real now,? Terry said.?

McCann responded: ?I believe the bootstrap theory does work, and I believe it?s necessary that we instill these values in people. And I think it?s time we start having true dialogue about what the real issue is here.??

Later, McCann expanded by saying that the greatest teachers he had were his parents.?

?I graduated in a class of 750 people in the top 5 percent of my class, and I never attended kindergarten,? he said. ?I had opportunities afforded to me through my parents, who were not rich; they were working class people. But what I had going for me that a lot of people don?t have going for them today is that I had a mom who was there waiting for me when I got home, who inspired me to do my homework. And the rule was I did my homework before I went outside to play?. Today, the open discussion, the dialogue that we need to have today goes back to family values. By getting the families back involved in the education of their children, and making sure that they inspire those children to reach the attainable goal, to do the best that they can. That?s what I believe. I believe it wholeheartedly.??

David Moore, the Democratic candidate in the Republican-leaning House District 74, riffed on Terry and McCann?s disagreement.?

?Since the 2011 legislature, the Republicans in the legislature cut your bootstraps off,? he said. ?I will start off 2013 by immediately restoring the funding, and then we will look at the budget and go forward and see if we can get some more money for the jobs you do.??

Delmas Parker, the Democratic candidate in Republican-leaning House District 74, assailed those who argue the state can?t afford to pay for early childhood education.?

?Budgets are moral documents, where you put that money,? he said. ?Half the children in Winston-Salem under five years of age is living in poverty?. How can we cut taxes on people making over $800,000 a year? How do we take a half-cent sales tax, and say we don?t have any money? There is revenue out there.??

Most of the candidates said they agreed with a 2011 decision by Superior Court Judge Howard Manning that the state is obligated to provide pre-kindergarten education to all ?at-risk? children. McCann said he would be compelled to abide by the law, but that he ?was unable to determine what an at-risk child was determined to be.??

Virtually all the candidates said they find merit to the idea of early childhood education, but they differed on whether the state should fund it beyond a basic obligation to ?at-risk? children.?

?Why is it that we will update our iPhones, we?ll update our cars, we?ll update everything around us except how we educate our kids, or even considering a program to educate our kids?? Hanes asked. ?Choice is fine. But I think it might be time to look at it. My kids are pretty smart today. My 4-year-old is smarter than I will ever be.??

    One exception was McCann.?

?I?m not going to be a cheerleader for the Smart Start program,? he said. ?While I wholeheartedly support and want no child left behind I totally disagree with the part of starting our education level at four years of age?. I do find it a waste of taxpayer money to start it at a very early age. If we continue at this pace,? he asked, ?are we going to take children out of birthing room when the mother gives birth, and put them directly into kindergarten at that time? Where do we stop??

What Happened With Jobless Claims - Business Insider

After this morning's surprisingly positive jobless claims number was released, three things happened:
    1. Lots of people felt better about the economy
    2. Democrats cheered because they thought the number would help Obama
    3. Republicans seized on confusing reports that the numbers had "excluded claims from one large state" (probably California) and blasted the number as wrong and misleading.

Since then, the argument has raged on, and there have been a variety of different reports and interpretations.

Well, we're glad to say that we've finally gotten to the bottom of what happened.

We spoke to a source at the Labor Department. According to this source, who is an analyst at the Department, here's what happened:

    • ALL STATES WERE INCLUDED in this week's jobless claims. Assertions that "a large state" was excluded from the report are patently false.

    HOWEVER...

    • It is likely that some of the jobless claims in one large state--California--were not included in the claims reported to the Department of Labor this week.? This happens occasionally, our source says. When a state's jobless claims bureau is short-staffed, sometimes the state does not process all of the claims that came in during the week in time to get them to the DOL. The source believes that this is what happened this week.
    • The California claims that were not processed in time to get into this week's jobless report will appear in future reports, most likely next week's or the following week's. In other words, those reports might be modestly higher than expected.
    • The source believes that the number of California claims that were not processed totalled about 15,000-25,000. Thus, if one were to "normalize" the overall not-seasonally-adjusted jobless claims number, it would increase by about 15,000-25,000.
    • This week's "normalized" jobless claims number, therefore, would be about 355,000-365,000, not the 339,000 that was reported. This compares to the 370,000 consensus expectation.

In other words, had all of California's jobless claims been processed in time to make the jobless-claims release, this jobless number would still have been better than economists were expecting--but not as much better as it appeared.

Again, the as-yet-unprocessed claims will appear in future reports. So next week's number may well be higher than expected.

So, who's right about today's jobless claims number?

    Everyone's right!

    • Jobless claims were better than expected, even after adjusting for an unusual anomaly
    • There was an unusual anomaly that made this week's jobless claims look better than they would otherwise have been.

Rick Springfield leads singalong on NYC subway

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

When celebrities are spotted on subways, they're usually just going from point A to point B as quietly as possible. The opposite was the case recently with singer and former "General Hospital" heartthrob Rick Springfield.

The man behind "Jessie's Girl" belted that hit and more?from some of the city's finest subway platforms for crowds of surprised -- and vocal -- fans. (Check out more videos over at Gothamist.)

Although the sing-alongs appear to be impromptu, they were somewhat planned. Springfield was promoting his new album, "Songs for the End of the World," which was released earlier this week.

The 63-year-old rocker/actor also has a documentary about his fans, "An Affair of the Heart," playing in New York from Oct. 10-16. Check out the trailer below.

U.S. jobless claims fall to lowest in four and a half years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits slid last week to the lowest level in more than four and a half years, according to government data that may provide a boost to President Barack Obama a month before voters go to the polls.

The Labor Department report on Thursday was the latest data to suggest improvement in the jobs market, though the surprisingly large 30,000 drop in new claims may have reflected distortions due to seasonal adjustments that are likely to be smoothed out in coming weeks.

"The overall trend seems to be that the labor market is improving," said Brian Kim, a currency strategist at RBS Securities in Stamford, Connecticut.

A Labor Department analyst said seasonal factors had predicted a very large increase in claims last week, which he said would be typical for the first week of the quarter. Unadjusted claims did rise, but far less than expected, resulting in the sharp drop in the seasonally adjusted figure.

He noted that one state reported a decline in claims last week when a rise had been expected. No states had been estimated for the report, he said.

"We will likely see some payback in the claims data reported next week. But through this potential volatility, it does look like the trend in the claims is improving somewhat," said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan.

California, given its large population and past "massive swings" in its claims data, was probably the state that caused the sharp drop in the seasonally adjusted figure, Silver said.

The jobs data was tempered by a second report on Thursday that hinted at weaker U.S. and global demand.

The U.S. trade deficit widened in August to $44.2 billion, as U.S. goods exports fell for the fifth consecutive month and imports declined fractionally.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell to a seasonally adjusted 339,000, the lowest number of new claims since February 2008, about a year before Obama took office in the midst of the global financial crisis.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims edging up to 370,0000 last week.

Zach Pandl, strategist at Columbia Management in Minneapolis, said "you do have to be cautious about possible distortions. But with that caveat, the jobless claims numbers have been modestly encouraging over the last few weeks."

The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, fell 11,500 to 364,000, the lowest in six months.

U.S. stocks rose in response to the jobs data, while Treasury debt prices slipped and the dollar was lower against a basket of currencies.

A government report on Friday showed employers added a modest 114,000 jobs to their payrolls in September, but the unemployment rate dropped sharply to 7.8 percent, also the lowest level since Obama took office.

Former General Electric chief executive Jack Welch and others suggested last week the payrolls data was fixed to make Obama look better ahead of the election, a charge strongly denied by the Labor Department.

Obama's opponent, Republican Mitt Romney, has accused the president of mishandling the economy.

Thursday's claims report showed the number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid fell to 3.27 million in the week ended September 29, the latest data available. It was the lowest since May.

    DECLINING TRADE

A Reuters poll on Thursday showed economists were slightly less optimistic about U.S. growth, lowering their median growth forecasts to an annualized 1.6 percent for the first quarter of 2013, compared to 1.7 percent last month.

The group of more than 70 respondents also trimmed their second-quarter forecasts to 2.1 percent from 2.3 percent, suggesting the U.S. economy will continue its slow, steady plod despite a recession in Europe, a slowdown in China and more restrictive fiscal policy at home.

The monthly trade gap increased to $44.2 billion in August, from an upwardly revised estimate of $42.5 billion in July, the Commerce Department said. Analysts were expecting an August trade gap of about $44.0 billion.

Overall U.S. exports dropped 1.0 percent as troubles in Europe continue to weigh on global growth, while imports fell 0.1 percent in a sign of faltering U.S. demand for consumer products, autos and capital goods.

"It looks like net exports will contribute negatively to GDP (gross domestic product) growth, subtracting as much as half a percentage point," said Michael Moran, chief economist at Daiwa Securities America in New York.

A separate Labor Department report showed that overall U.S. import prices rose 1.1 percent for the second consecutive month in September, while U.S. export prices rose 0.8 percent.

Senator Brown to donate money from owners of firm in meningitis outbreak

BOSTON (Reuters) - The campaign of U.S. Senator Scott Brown said on Wednesday it would donate to charity the campaign contributions received from the owners of a pharmacy at the center of a deadly meningitis outbreak.

"Sen. Brown supports a full and thorough investigation to determine responsibility for this tragedy and to ensure nothing like it ever happens again," the campaign of the Massachusetts Republican said in a statement. "In the meantime, the campaign is donating contributions from the company owners to the Meningitis Foundation of America."

A total of 138 people have contracted meningitis and 12 have died in the outbreak, which has been linked to a potentially contaminated steroid, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Idaho on Wednesday.

State and federal regulators have said that all of those infected were injected with drugs from New England Compounding Center, based in Framingham, Massachusetts. Owners of the firm, including Gregory Conigliaro, have donated to Brown's campaign, according to election records.

Brown is in the midst of a bruising re-election battle against Democratic nominee Elizabeth Warren, who is a Harvard professor. Brown was leading Warren by 47 percent to 43 percent in a recent poll of likely voters sponsored by radio station WBUR. The two candidates face off in debate later on Wednesday in Springfield.

Conigliaro donated $2,500 to Brown's campaign this year through the end of June, according to records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. Last month, Conigliaro and his wife, Cynthia, invited local entrepreneurs to their Southborough home for a fundraiser to meet Brown.

Attendees at that fundraiser who gave at least $500 to Brown's campaign were promised a signed copy of Brown's book, according to an invitation for the event. Donors of $1,000 were to receive a book and a "private VIP pre-reception" with Brown. And donors of $2,500 or more would get the book, private reception and have a photo taken with the senator.

New weapon in the war against malaria - the cell phone

    Reported by Lauren Hughes, M.D.:

There's a new weapon in the war against malaria - the cell phone.

Harvard researchers found they could track the spread of malaria in Kenya using phone calls and text messages from 15 million mobile phones.

"Before mobile phones, we had proxies for human travel, like road networks, census data and small-scale GPS studies," said study author Caroline Buckee, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. "But now that mobile phones have spread throughout the world, we can start using these massive amounts of data to quantify human movements on a larger scale and couple this data with knowledge of infection risk."

Buckee and colleagues used mobile phone records from June 2008 and June 2009 to track the timing and origin of calls and texts among 15 million Kenyan mobile phone subscribers. They then compared the volume of subscribers in a particular region to that region's known malaria prevalence. By studying networks of human and parasite movement, the team could then determine primary sources of malaria and who was most likely to become infected.

The results, published Thursday in the journal Science, suggest that malaria transmission within Kenya is dominated by travel from Lake Victoria on the country's western edge to the more central capital city of Nairobi. And human carriers of the malaria parasite, who may not show symptoms, far outpace the flying limits of mosquitoes in endemic regions.

"How travelers acquire malaria elsewhere and bring it home has been mostly surmised from expert knowledge and judgment," said Dr. William Schaffner, professor and chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University. "Here we've used this unrelated cell phone technology."

With 89 percent of the estimated 1 million annual malaria deaths occurring in Africa, the Harvard findings may help researchers better understand how human travel patterns can spread disease and potentially lead to improved public health efforts to curb the mosquito-borne infection.

"I think it is so neat and extraordinarily imaginative," said Schaffner. "It has me bouncing up and down in my chair with excitement."

Buckee anticipates that mobile technology could change approaches to malaria control. Long-employed anti-malaria strategies, such as the use of insecticides, bed nets, medications and mosquito-habitat removal, could be augmented by warning texts sent to travelers en route to and from malaria hot spots.

"I suspect that some people will get antsy about big brother following you," Schaffner said, alluding to the privacy concerns that accompany mobile technology. "I'm more excited about the possibilities to prevent serious disease."

Buckee said efforts to eradicate malaria in sub-Saharan countries, including Kenya, has been challenged by tight budgets.

"They can't screen and treat everyone," she said. "[Mobile phones] could be really powerful tools for targeting resources with very practical applications."

4 Tips to Ensure a Smooth Mortgage Loan Process | Life'd

    House keys on blueprint

With mortgage interest rates hovering between 3.5% and 4%, there has never been a better time to move up or jump into homeownership. The interest rate on your home loan dictates your monthly mortgage obligation, and when rates drop, you can lock in a low, affordable payment. But while low rates entice many to take out a loan, getting a mortgage approval is easier said than done.

The aftermath of the great mortgage crisis of 2007-2008 led to tighter lending guidelines, in which lenders went from one extreme to another. Anyone with a pulse could qualify for a mortgage before the crisis, whereas now you have to practically jump through hurdles.

Although tighter lending slows the path to homeownership ? with mortgage lenders rejecting between 26% and 50% of mortgage applications ? you shouldn?t let these figures scare you. The mortgage industry isn?t completely dead and many properties are sold each day.

To ensure a smooth, uncomplicated process, you have to know and give lenders what they want.

    1. Get Your Credit Straight

Don?t even think about applying for a home mortgage loan with a credit score under 620. This is the absolute minimum to qualify for a home loan, wherein an FHA mortgage is your best bet. Conventional mortgage lenders require a credit score of 680 or higher, with a score of 720+ commanding the most favorable interest rates. Fortunately, there?s plenty you can do to give your credit a boost.

    • Order your credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com and check for errors. Contact creditors to have errors removed from your report, or file a dispute with each of the three credit bureaus.
    • Always pay your creditors on time. Late or missed payments can be the kiss of death when applying for a home loan, and many lenders only allow one 30-day late payment in a 12-month period.
    • Pay off your credit cards and loans. This is by far the fastest and simplest ways to add points to your credit score. Even if you can?t pay the balance in full, start doubling or tripling your payments to widen the gap between what you owe and your credit limit.
    • Read our Credit Score Blueprint

    2. Get Your Documentation in Order

Lenders want to see proof (and more proof) of your financial history. This includes tax returns for the past two years, bank account statements and your recent paychecks. Yes, it?s a hassle to gather and make copies of these documents, but it?s necessary in order for lenders to assess your financial stability. Mortgage lenders will go to great lengths to avoid past mistakes, even if it means scrutinizing income records and denying otherwise qualified applicants for lack of financial documentation or gaps in their employment history.

    3. Reduce Your Debt-to-Income Ratio

Paying down credit cards and loans not only give your personal score a boost, it also lowers your debt-to-income ratio and improves your odds of getting a home loan. Mortgage lenders factor in how much you currently owe. They?ll take the minimum payments for all your balances and weigh this against your gross monthly income.

As a rule, debt payments (including your home loan) cannot exceed 36% of your gross monthly income. This isn?t a hard and fast rule, and some lenders allow debt percentages as high as 41%. However, if you want to guarantee a home loan approval, pay down your existing debts and don?t take on new debts until after you?ve closed on your mortgage loan.

    4. Save Your Cash

If you?ve never purchased a home, or if it?s been four or five years since your last purchase, you might not be up to speed with the latest cash requirements. Just a few short years ago anyone could walk into a mortgage lender?s office, sign their name and purchase a house with very little out-of-pocket. Maybe they paid cash for a home appraisal or a home inspection. But as far as down payments and closing costs, these were practically extinct. Lenders offered 100% financing, and when a seller didn?t pay a buyer?s closing costs, lenders simply rolled these fees into the loan.

Fast forward to present day and it?s a completely different story. Mortgage lenders no longer front the entire cost of a home purchase, but now require a minimum down payment between 3.5% and 5%. Yet, the costs don?t stop here. You also need money for your closing costs, which can fall between 3% and 5% of the purchase price. All in all, mortgage-related fees can run upwards of 10% of the purchase price.
