?SNL? takes on gun control (VIDEO)

(NBC)

"Saturday Night Live" devoted its cold-opening sketch to the gun control debate on Saturday, skewering the Senate's hard work on the legislation.

"The Senate voted 68 to 31 to begin debating the idea of discussing gun control," President Barack Obama, played by Jay Pharaoh, said. "Let me say that again. They'd agreed to begin thinking about talking about gun control."

Pharoah's Obama praised for Sens. Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey for their bipartisan work on gun control legislation. And Sen. Toomey. This man is a Republican who is willing to make just the slightest compromise on gun control? He's going to lose his job too.""

"These men risked everything for this bill," he said. "I mean, Sen. Manchin represents West Virginia and he's proposing gun reform? He's gonna lose his job. And Sen. Toomey. This man is a Republican who is willing to make just the slightest compromise on gun control? He's going to lose his job too."

"If our bill passes," Toomey (portrayed by "SNL's" Bill Hader), announced, "no individual can purchase a handgun from a private dealer without being asked, 'Are you a good person?' as well as the follow-up, 'Seriously, are you?'"

While they were unable to reach an agreement on limiting high-capacity magazines, the pair said, they were able to set a limit on the number of guns you can shoot at once at two.

"Is this bill what we wanted? No," Manchin (Jason Sudeikis) admitted. "Is it what the NRA wanted? No. Will it help in some small way? Probably not."
